SKH Tin Shui Wai Ling Oi Primary School - Strategies for Cultivating an Inclusive Culture by adopting the “Whole School Approach”

School management’s recognition for and support to the work of Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) is of utmost importance.  In this interview, Mr HUNG Wai-shing, the School Head of S.K.H. Tin Shui Wai Ling Oi Primary School, the Deputy Head and SENCO shared with us how to embody the “Person-Centered” approach and effectively implement the Whole School Approach (WSA) to integrated education (IE) with a view to building an inclusive culture in school.

Early in the 2011/12 school year, the school arranged a senior teacher at promotion rank to lead the Student Support Team to plan, coordinate and implement the WSA to IE. Teachers of different functional groups and/or subject panels have been collaborating with one another to devise learning support plans for students with special educational needs.  The school has attached great importance to teachers’ professional development and encouraged all staff members to uphold the “Person-Centered” approach to cater for the individual differences of students.  The school has also been implementing experiential learning programmes with relevance to students’ interests and abilities, and providing opportunities for students with diverse abilities to serve others, thereby developing their potentials and enhancing their confidence and sense of accomplishment.
