Social Chill & Connect — Video Modelling Teaching Resource Package for Social Communication

  • This resource package comprises seven thematic series: Social Thinking, Two-Way Communication, Electronic Communication, Group Conversations, Handling Feedback and Teasing, Negotiation and Communication, and Sportsmanship. Centred around authentic daily life scenarios of secondary school students, it enables learners to observe, model, and practise target behaviours demonstrated in the videos to master essential social skills.
  • Research indicates that video modelling is an evidence-based pedagogical strategy that effectively enhances skill performance across multiple domains for students with special educational needs (SEN), particularly autistic students.

The videos are organized into 7 themes below (available in Chinese only)

[ Show / Hide ] Guiding Principles
  • Video modelling instructional materials are highly flexible and can be effectively implemented in individual coaching, small group training, or regular classroom teaching.
  • The materials feature both non-examples and positive examples, which should be shown together to deepen understanding through contrast. Do not present non-examples in isolation to prevent students from inadvertently imitating undesirable behaviours.
  • Before playing the video, clearly remind students to pay close attention to the specific behavioural steps demonstrated. Pause the video at appropriate teaching moments to facilitate discussions on the characters' facial expressions, emotions, thoughts, actions, and corresponding consequences.
  • When utilising video modelling materials, it is recommended to integrate other evidence-based support strategies to achieve complementary educational outcomes, such as:
Visual Strategies
Convert summary freeze-frames or key scenes from the videos into visual prompt cards to remind students to apply the relevant skills in authentic daily situations.
Behavioural Rehearsal
Immediately guide students to model and practise the target behaviours shown in the clips, and conduct behavioural rehearsals tailored to real-life scenarios to foster skill mastery.
Home-School Collaboration
Upon completing instruction, assist students in generalising the target behaviours across diverse life contexts (e.g. share the videos with parents and encourage them to review together at home to reinforce and extend learning outcomes).
Note: School personnel are welcome to produce tailored videos for their students. For the step-by-step production workflow, please refer to the following tutorial video: https://youtu.be/jl_W4oVppyw
