Background

Lutheran School for the Deaf (LSD) is an aided special school and the only special school in Hong Kong that provides education for hearing impaired students from Primary One to Secondary Six.  The service targets of the school can be divided into two categories: the hearing impaired students who are studying in the primary and secondary sections of the school, and the hearing impaired students in ordinary schools participating in the "Enhanced Support Service for Hearing Impaired Students Attending Ordinary Schools" (ESS).  LSD offers the basic curricula of the six-year primary education, the curricula of the four-year junior secondary and three-year senior secondary education, which totals a thirteen years of mainstream curriculum.  It also provides adapted curricula for students with hearing impairment and other disabilities.

The school believes that every student is unique, so it introduces diversified curricula to promote students’ life planning, stimulates their unlimited potentials, and enhances their physical and mental development.  With a variety of well-equipped school facilities, students can lay foundations for lifelong learning in an ideal learning environment.  With God's guidance, teaching staff’s efforts and parents’ support, the school strives to provide a Christian holistic education for the hearing impaired students, to implement the school motto, “The deaf receives God’s grace.”, and to safeguard the students’ growth.

 

Highlights

LSD continues to optimise and improve the campus environment and facilities to enhance the effectiveness of learning and teaching and to facilitate the development of the students' life planning.  Meanwhile, "Other Learning Experience (OLE)" courses are added, where students are arranged to engage in learning activities out of the classrooms.

Mindset Cultivation for Technology Innovation

Along with the development of STEM education, the school cultivates innovation and technology talents in a holistic and coherent way, by using the “Innovation & Exploration Lab and Creative & Technology Room” as the bases of STEM activities.  Starting from an early age, students learn to improve their perception and small hand muscles coordination; and to explore the knowledge of STEM gradually.  Secondary students are encouraged to participate in different competitions, so that they can strengthen their understanding on the “Design and Technology” subject and their critical mindset.

Life Planning for Better Living

The school’s sustainable development plans are helping the hearing impaired students to open up their future.  “Dr. Lam Sai Keung, Alex Multi-purpose Home Economics Room” is not only a teaching place, but also a venue for trainings, which equips students with skills to prepare food & beverage (F&B) and to serve guests at large-scale events.  Through the “Experiencing Life & Entwined Love” Programme, the school provides a professional simulation setting for students to acquire technique for F&B preparation, coffee shop operation and business management.  In addition, the newly launched library has a built-in flower shop and an organic soilless green wall, which are used for training courses of hand-crafted floral creation and venue layouts design, to cultivate future hearing-impaired professionals in this field.  Through floral art exposure and plant maintenance sessions, the school also provides positive education on life, morality and environmental protection; many opportunities for home-school cooperation and parent-child harmony are created at the same time.

In view of the fact that, e-sports is not only a popular sport among teenagers, but also a potential future career. The school, in response to the interests and demands of students, has specially established the “Dr. Lam Sai Keung, Alex LSD E-sports Station”, for them to fight for their dreams and for the school to build up appropriate attitude of students towards e-sports.

Inspiring Sports Elites, Nurturing Arts Talents

LSD emphasises the physical and mental wellness, and thus provides different physical and arts activities to the students.  The multi-purpose Assembly Hall is as a dance studio and the newly built Sensory Integration Fitness Room. It allows students to experience variety types of sports such as ball games, rope skipping and dancing, etc., and enables them to understand the knowledge of their physical bodies better in order to boost their physical fitness performance and public examination results, and to encourage them to challenge their own limits constantly.

Diversified Curriculum with Individualised Teaching

The Chinese Culture Teaching Resources Room can vividly present Chinese culture and history to the students and enhance their interests in learning Chinese culture.  With the supports of the Sign Language Teaching Resource Centre and the LSD Visual Sign Language Dictionary, the school establishes a systematic communication and teaching language for its learning and teaching use.  It enables students to develop their sign language, oral language and written language balanced, and enriches their communication effectiveness and self-confidence.  The “Ear Connect” mobile application can facilitate effective learning of sign language among the public, while promoting an inclusive environment.

The hardware and curriculum design of the school are closely linked with students’ life planning.  The school does not only provide knowledge from the books, but also bridge its students for their integration to the community, by helping them gradually transit from campus life to independent living upon graduation.  Students are motivated to face their challenges, to contribute to the society wholeheartedly, and to strive for excellence in their own paths confidently.
