Background
Hong Kong Red Cross Hospital Schools is an aided special school. The school is subsidized by the Education Bureau (EDB) of the HKSAR and is administered by the Hong Kong Red Cross. Based on the Red Cross Principle of Humanity, the school cares for students with physical handicap and sickness by providing them with holistic education and fostering the value of respect for life during their hospitalization. They aim to create a pleasurable and sustainable learning environment with continuing education programs and adapted curriculum in the hospital so that they will encounter less difficulty in resuming school upon discharge. Established in 1954, the Hong Kong Red Cross Hospital Schools now operates 26 units in 19 public hospitals. They provides education services for hospitalized children aged 6 to 18, with classes of Primary 1 to Secondary 6.
Highlights
In accordance with the mainstream school curriculum and the perspectives of “One curriculum framework for all” principle, they implement their school-based curriculum in connection with the EDB’s curriculum development framework of subjects under the key learning areas. Among all, Life Education is particularly characterized in hospital contexts.
