Background

Hong Kong Red Cross Princess Alexandra School (PAS) cares for students with physical disability, it provides them with an adaptive learning environment, curriculum and career-life plan.  Moreover, the school nurtures students with good learning attitudes and manners, builds their sense of responsibility, self-confidence and positivity, to let them excel in the future.  All these help them develop the habit of life-long learning and be ready to integrate and serve the society.

The school is a barrier-free building with nearly 40 classrooms and special rooms that serve teaching purposes, the premises also include a physiotherapy room, an occupational therapy room, a visual and sensory integration therapy room, a speech therapy room, etc., to provide various training for students. The school improvement works for the school's new wing has been completed in 2021.  Those works have further improved the school’s facilities, the ‘Career-life planning and vocational training room’ is one of the newly built rooms that equip students with essential skills and knowledge that help them face the possible challenges in the future.

The boarding section of the school provides five-day and seven-day boarding services to students in need.  The building was rebuilt in late 2008.  There are now 3 family houses, a gymnasium and a multiple purpose hall which provide sufficient spaces for students’ accommodation, training and activities.

Highlights

Hong Kong Red Cross Princess Alexandra School (PAS) is providing various curricula to cater for students with different needs.  On top of the mainstream curriculum, different levels of adapted curricula are also provided, which allow flexibility in learning and teaching.

Mainstream curriculum

The mainstream curriculum follows the curriculum guide provided by the Eucation Bureau (EDB) and students aim at acquiring good result in the HKDSE and to further study after graduation.

School-based adapted curriculum

The school-based adapted curriculum emphasises the importance of prevocational and life-skills training.  It aims at enhancing students’ knowledge, skills of and attitude towards future workplace needs.  Students are expected to admit to skill centres, enter the job market through supportive employment programme or open employment after graduation.

Curriculum for students with intellectual disability

The curriculum follows the adapted curriculum guide provided by the EDB.  Teaching content is designed based on students’ intellectual level, so as to enlighten students’ potential and help them build a better life after graduation.

Other than academic development, the school also attaches importance to physical education, cultural art and creativity.  Lots of students and alumni of PAS have been representatives of Hong Kong Paralympic Team who participated in world-class competition for Hong Kong.  One of the alumni, Mr. So Wa Wai, BBS, MH, had once made the world record in both the 100 and 200 m men's T36 classification.  Besides running, the school has also provided various sports training (e.g. bocce and wheelchair fencing) for students with different talents.

Cultural art development is also a key development area in PAS.  The school drum team has won the champion and the best drummer award in Hong Kong Synergy 24 Drum Competition.  Other musical instruments courses, such as Yangqin and handbell, etc., are also organised to foster students’ musical talent.

The school strongly believes that student’ creativity is an important asset in one’s future and it will be one of the essential skills to face one’s future challenges.  PAS, therefore, makes every endeavour to encourage students to be creative. The students have invented ‘Walking Aids Pocket’ under the topic of ‘Difficulties experienced by people with disabilities.  Their idea was appreciated and they have won the Gold Award in ‘Youth Impact Award’.

Every student’s individual success brings glory to PAS.
