School-based Teacher Development Project on Enhancing Kindergarten Teachers’ Competence in Promoting Students’ Social-Emotional Development: 3Es Project

Background

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), with support from the Simon K. Y. Lee Children’s Foundation, developed and implemented the “Early Prevention, Early Identification and Early Intervention: A School-Based Support Model of Social-Emotional Development for Kindergarten Children” (3Es Model) from the 2015/16 to 2020/21 school years.  The 3Es Model is a school-based support model with tiered intervention to address kindergarten students’ needs in social-emotional development, through activities that aim to enhance their emotion expressivity, emotion regulation, cognitive control, empathy and prosocial behaviours.  In view of the positive outcomes from this locally developed curriculum and evidence-based support model, the EDB has launched the “School-based Teacher Development Project on Enhancing Kindergarten Teachers’ Competence in Promoting Students’ Social-Emotional Development: 3Es” (3Es Project) in the 2021/22 school year, aiming to enhance kindergarten teachers' competence in fostering students' affective and social development.

Objectives

The 3Es Project aims to support kindergartens in catering for the diverse affective and social needs of students through implementing the 3Es Model of early prevention, early identification and early intervention.  By providing school-based teacher development and building a sharing network for professional exchanges, the 3Es Project helps enhance kindergarten teachers’ competence in fostering students’ affective and social development.

Description

The 3Es Project is implementing in the following modes:

  • School-based Teacher Development:  the EDB supports kindergartens in the implementation of 3Es curriculum and support model through professional consultation, staff development and parent education activities
  • Sharing Network: kindergartens share their experiences and outcomes in the implementation of the 3Es Project through joint-school workshops
