SENSE :: Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO)

A Day of a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO)

At present, all public sector ordinary primary and secondary schools are provided with a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO).  SENCOs play a significant role in promoting the development of integrated education (IE) in schools.  SENCOs assist school principals and vice-principals in formulating policies and measures for IE, leading the Student Support Team to assist schools in planning and promoting Whole School Approach in IE, coordinating appropriate school-based support for students with special educational needs (SEN), facilitating collaboration between teachers and specialists and promoting home-school cooperation.

SENCOs start with small steps and continue to enhance the inclusive culture, policies and measures in schools.  They enable different stakeholders to understand, accept and appreciate the diversity of students with SEN gradually and strategically, so that every student with SEN would be loved and respected.  The work of SENCOs is  rewarding and challenging, as they sow the seeds for the future of students and society.  Their dedication and professionalism are fully recognised.  We believe that with appropriate support and guidance, students can unleash their potential and realise their dreams.
