School for Children with Mild
and Moderate Intellectual Disability
(The following information is provided by the school.)
Background
Mary Rose School strives to provide a comprehensive learning environment and quality whole-person education to children with intellectual disabilities. The school upholds a student-based teaching ideal, engages in collaborative teaching and jointly design suitable learning materials. Through flexible grouping strategies such as whole-class, small group, and individual training, the school aims to cater for the learning needs of different students. At the same time, the school emphasizes on developing students’ learning interest and creative thinking. In addition, in response to students' diverse abilities and developmental needs, the school provides appropriate support and in-class assistance from Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Resource Teachers for Students with Autism, Non-Chinese Speaking Students Support Teachers, and Native-speaking English Teacher. In particular, the Resource Support Team for Students with Autism arranges different learning groups to assist students with autism in overcoming learning, communication, and social barriers, as well as establishing appropriate behavioral patterns and facilitating their integration into the community.
Through formal and informal curriculum, the school provides different learning opportunities for students to expand their life experience. A variety of extra-curricular activities, potential development activities and competitions would also be organized to allow students to enjoy, to discover their potential and to develop their perseverance.
The school also places emphasis on cultivating students' independence and autonomy. Through Career Guidance and Life Planning education, students are encouraged to understand themselves, set goals, and develop their academic, leisure, and career pathways. Students participate in individual counseling, engage in work experience and internships to prepare themselves and make suitable plans for the future.
Highlights
In addition to diversified teaching, the school places a strong emphasis on cultivating students' moral education. In the academic year 2021-2022, the school was honored with the "The 5th Outstanding Moral Education Teaching Award" co-organized by the Education Bureau and the South Union Education Fund. Through a spiral curriculum approach combined with original songs created by the school, abstract moral themes are gradually infused into the lessons, nurturing students to uphold positive values.
The school actively promotes digital learning and develops e-books as teaching aids. With the implementation of STEAM education in earlier years, students' technological skills are effectively enhanced. In addition, by integrating STEAM elements across different subject areas and interdisciplinary learning activities, students' learning interests are heightened, and their creative thinking and problem-solving abilities are fostered. Furthermore, through the STEAM Channel teaching videos produced by teachers, students can learn STEAM knowledge at home and engage in experiments with their families to experience the scientific principles involved in parent-child learning.
To embody the teaching philosophy of "Dare to Try and Do Your Best," the school's Gifted Development Team provides diverse "Gifted Stars" performance platforms, enabling students to boost their confidence and unleash their potential. In the holistic development of students, physical and artistic talents are highly valued. The school arranges students' participation in various types of sports and arts activities based on their interests, orientations, and abilities. In recent years, students have represented Hong Kong, China in major sports competitions such as the Special Olympics, International Federation for Intellectual Disability Sport Virtus Global Games, and National Games for Persons with Disabilities, all achieving outstanding results.
