Caritas Pelletier School
School for
Social Development
(The following information is provided by the school.)
Background
Caritas Pelletier School is committed to the mission of Hong Kong Caritas. This includes “helping the underprivileged and the vulnerable”, “encouraging people to actualise their potential”, “promoting mutual understanding and reconciliation”, and “nurturing a spirit of reciprocity to the community from which the people have benefited”. The basic philosophy underlying the school’s services is the respect for the innate dignity and value of each person, and the belief that each students needs love and acceptance along with firm and consistent guidance. By providing total care and comprehensive training to students, they will be lead towards a positive, contributive and rewarding life. By integrating the five Catholic educational values, ‘Truth, Justice, Love, Family, Life’ into the curriculum and daily activities, the school enhances the development and growth of the students morally, academically, physically, socially, aesthetically, and spiritually. Through the curriculum, students can live up to the school motto, ‘Be Faithful, Diligent and Stay Simple, Love God and One Another’. Hence, students are able to educate themselves through self-discipline, self-respect, self-worth, self-management and improvement, and service for others.
Highlights
"You give us a young girl, astray and directionless… We give you back, a young lady with great potential."
A concentric moral circle
The main focus of the school is to cultivate students’ good moral character. A moral concentric circle was created and developed based on the school motto: ‘Be Faithful, Diligent, and Stay Simple; Love God and One Another’. Through the ‘Monthly Star’ Award Scheme, Prefect Teams, and Social Services programme, students' moral values are gradually refined at different levels.
The 3-tier Intervention Model
The school has developed “The 3-tier Intervention Model” to support students with special educational needs.
The First Tier: Differentiated Instruction
The whole-school approach of “Differentiated instruction” aims to cater for students’ learning diversity. The school tailor-makes different learning tasks and adopts various assessment strategies for students. This differentiated approach improves students’ confidence in learning and empowers them with a positive learning attitude.
The Second Tier: ‘Bling Bling Ice-breaking Goal’ Programme
Teaching staff carefully assess students’ emotional, behavioural and personal growth, as well as academic and social communication priorities. Goals are set by the teachers and students together, aiming at creating a meaningful and successful experience, and transforming the students into shiny gems.
The Third Tier: Individualised Educational Plan
Additional individual support is provided to students who face severe problems. To tailor Individualised Educational Plans and cater for students’ comprehensive needs, the school collaborates with the educational psychologist, the speech therapist, and the social workers in the hostels.
Short-term adjustment programme
The short-term adjustment programme is provided to upper primary to junior secondary students who temporarily encounter family-related, behavioural or emotional difficulties. The duration of this programme is normally between three months to one year. Case meetings are held periodically in order to review students’ progress. Students who have completed the programme with satisfaction will return to their original schools as soon as they are ready.
